Where on (Google)Earth?

woge_series.jpg

Way back in January of 2007, I started a simple quiz game using images from GoogleEarth. I saved an image from some undisclosed location (typically showcasing some geological or other natural feature), posted it on this blog, and asked my readers to try and figure out where it is. After several posts in this format, Ron had the great idea that the winner gets to post the next one.

Wo(G)E is going strong and can be found on any of the various geoscience blogs (see the sidebar at right) … sometimes they are solved in a matter of hours, sometimes it takes several days. Where is Where on (Google)Earth? Part of the fun is finding it. Good luck!

Friday Field Fotos

fff_series.jpg

I started this series soon after starting the blog (October 2006). I have done a fair amount of field research and have attended numerous geological field trips over the past several years. Going outside and seeing rocks in their ‘natural habitat’ is a great pleasure for most geologists. As a result, I have a large collection of photographs. On most (but not every) Friday I post one of these photos and offer a short explanation of the feature.

Sea-Floor Sundays

sss_series.jpg

This series was started more recently (October 2007). My PhD research was focused on processes and patterns related to deep-marine sedimentation. Images of the modern sea floor are a key tool in understanding these processes. Like the field photographs, I’ve collected and/or bookmarked various interesting bathymetric (sea-floor topography) images. On most (but not every) Sunday I show one of these and discuss it.

Theoretical Stratigraphy

Posts in this series are few and far between, but are meant to dive a bit deeper into some classic and important papers in stratigraphy. I plan to add more in the future.

Theoretical Stratigraphy #1: Wheeler’s Baselevel

Theoretical Stratigraphy #2: Barrell and the Rhythms of Geologic Time
