I did not win Where on (Google)Earth #179 over on Ron Schott’s blog last week — but the commenter who did relinquished the privilege to host the next installment and Ron opened it up to anyone.

Ron and I thought it would be fun for Clastic Detritus to host the next one because today happens to be the three-year anniversary of Where on (Google)Earth! Way back in 2007 I started this game and it’s been really fun to see that it’s still going.

This one does not include a scale and does not include the north arrow on purpose — just to make it a bit more challenging.

If you’ve never played Wo(G)E … simply put the latitude-longitude coordinates in the comments below and then you get to host (or pick the location if you don’t have a blog) for the next one. Typically, the winner also provides a few comments about the geological feature(s) on display.

I will invoke the Schott Rule — you have to wait one hour for each Wo(G)E win you have before you can answer.

This week’s Sea-Floor Sunday highlights the Florida peninsula and surrounding waters. I chose Florida this week because I was just there for a family reunion and vacation.

The image is a screen grab from GoogleEarth. If you go to this USGS page you can get the .kmz file and view it in GoogleEarth yourself.

Speaking of GoogleEarth, the Where on (Google)Earth? series is alive and well and making it’s way around the blogosphere again. Looks like Silver Fox won the most recent.

I’ve looked around and can’t find the location … is it that difficult? Or, are people bored of WoGE? Or, did they simply not know where it was being hosted?

At this point, someone just needs to find the dang place and revive this game … I fear that the longer it sits in a potentially lonely corner of the web, the greater the chance of it fading away … forever. Nobody wants that.

So, get over there and find it! If you win, you get to host the next one.

UPDATE: Ron got it … check the link above for info about #156.

There’s been a lot of activity in the geoblogosphere the last few days … I guess we are coming out of summer break, people are returning from field work, starting up their academic terms, and all that stuff. There’s been so much activity (e.g., the fifty minerals meme) that posts are getting buried quick.

Here are a few items that I wanted to call attention to before I forget:

(1) Callan over at NOVA Geoblog is conducting a survey about geoscience blogs and blogging. The more data the better, so if you haven’t taken the survey yet (it takes only a few minutes), head on over and do it!

(2) Chris at goodSchist.com will be hosting the September 2008 edition of The Accretionary Wedge geoscience blog carnival. The theme is …

(3) Whatever happened to Where on (Google)Earth? — Péter is still waiting for an answer. If you win, you get to pick the next location and host it.

Wow, number 119! Where on (Google)Earth is still going strong … love it.

I’m going to be heading out of town in a couple of days, so if this sits around for more than a day, I’ll start giving some clues.

For those that have never played … simply put the latitude-longitude coordinates in the comments below and then you get to host (or pick the location if you don’t have a blog) for the next one. Typically, the winner also provides a few comments about the geological feature(s) on display.

I will invoke the Schott Rule — you have to wait one hour for each Wo(G)E win you have before you can answer.

BGC found my Wo(G)E birthday location near Reyes, Bolivia. The very first Where on (Google)Earth was Point Reyes just north of San Francisco.

BGC does not have a blog so he asked me to post his location for him.

To make this a little more challenging, I trimmed the scale and image attribution information off the bottom of the image. The winner of this must include some geologic information … whatever is going on here, it is pretty cool.

The Schott Rule is in effect: you must wait one hour for every previous Wo(G)E that you have won.

Post Time: January 19th, 2008, 6:30 PM Pacific Standard Time (convert to your time zone here)

~

I updated some stats earlier today. These are wins by player through Wo(G)E #97:

Ron Schott – 28

Kent (magma?) – 7

sagan – 7

Lab Lemming – 6

BrianR – 5

Kim – 5

Zoltán – 5

Thermochronic – 4

Yami – 4

JMA – 4

Geology Joe – 3

Jim Repka – 3

John Van Hosen – 2

BGC – 2

…and then there are an additional 12 players with only one win. You’ll have to start winning some to see your name :)

Check out some interesting spatial stats regarding one year’s worth of Wo(G)E locations Lab Lemming put together here.

Well, well, well … one year ago today (January 18th, 2007), the first Where on (Google)Earth was posted (I think I still owe Thermochronic a t-shirt).

Wow, almost 100 installments in one year!

I’m really happy that this game has been so successful. A lot of credit goes to Ron for first suggesting that we make a series in which the winner hosts the next one. That format has certainly contributed to making the geoblogosphere more connected.

Back in October 2007, I compiled some stats of the winners. I will update that this weekend. Ron has updated his .kmz file as well: http://ron.outcrop.org/kml/WoGE.kmz

In case you haven’t played in a while, it has expanded even more in recent weeks as a result of establishing more connectivity in the geoblogosphere. There is now a blog site devoted to WoGE called A Thin Section. Essentially, those who win but don’t have a blog can suggest a location to A Thin Section and it’ll be posted there. Additionally, the site will provide a link to where the current WoGE is being hosted (in case you can’t find it).

Thanks to everybody for playing! I hope we can continue having fun with this game.

Without any further ado, here is Where on (Google)Earth #97.

Just for birthday fun, there is no Schott Rule for this one! I often think that the locations I choose will be difficult and then they end up being easy for somebody. If this one sits around for a couple days without any action, I’ll provide a clue.

Good luck!

For any new players to Where on (Google)Earth, simply put the lat-long or detailed description of the location in the comments below. A lot of us will typically say a little something about the geography or geology and sometimes we share our tactics for searching. If you win, you get to host the next one.

BGC found the location I wish I had spent more time in while doing field work in Patagonia. Santiago de Chile is pretty far from the southern tip of the continent (>3 hour flight), but you need to go through there on your way. I always wanted to spend time hanging out but was always in too much of a rush because our field season was during the academic year (February-March). What a shame.

Anyway … BGC does not have a blog and cannot host the next one. In this case, BGC gets the credit for the win and then e-mailed me a location to post for #89. For future reference, this is a great solution for those of you who want to play but don’t have a blog of your own.

For any new players to Where on (Google)Earth, simply put the lat-long or detailed description of the location in the comments below. A lot of us will typically say a little something about the geography or geology and sometimes we share our tactics for searching. If you win, you get to host the next one.

As usual, the Schott Rule is in effect (previous winners must wait one hour for every win that they have before offering a solution).

Good luck!

Lab Lemming attempted to broaden the appeal of Where-on(G)E (not to be confused with the beta What-on(G)E series over at Highly Allochthonous) by posting an image of an area dominated by ice … perhaps hoping to get some climate scientists involved.

Unfortunately for them, I finally found an idle moment to look for a Where-on(G)E. Lately I haven’t found the time to do some proper searching…combined with the fact that I couldn’t find any of them! This time, I think I got a tad lucky … Lab Lemming’s comments that this area was of some importance made me think it had to be something that wasn’t too obscure. I saw the cracks in the ice and immediately thought of the Larsen Ice Shelf. I went there and … boo yah.

So, Where on (Google)Earth #88 is back here on Clastic Detritus and very close to the anniversary of the series (see Where-on(G)E #1 from January 18, 2007 here).

In honor of that, I’m going to do something new and show a feature that hasn’t really been shown too much in past installments — a major city. Maybe some of you will immediately recognize this place. I’m hoping this aspect will attract some new players. So, for this one you have to name the city and then just a very general statement about the geology. Click on the image for a bigger version.

We usually require some coordinates with an answer, but you can simply name the city and country for this one (put your answer in the comments).

Good luck and the Schott Rule is in effect (previous winners must wait at least one hour for each win that they have before posting a solution). The winner gets to host the next Where on (Google)Earth on their blog.
