Friday Field Foto #123: Sometimes you need to cross a river

This week’s Friday Field Foto doesn’t show any geology — but shows what a geologist must sometimes do to get to the rocks. In this case, I think we are on our way back from spending several days staying at the base of and climbing the mountain in the background on the right. Good times.

Friday Field Foto #122: Channelized Miocene strata, Tierra del Fuego

This week’s Friday Field Foto is from some Miocene beach-cliff exposures on the Atlantic coast of Tierra del Fuego. These sandstones are characterized by a mix of ‘normal’ turbidites thick successions of traction-dominated (including large climbing dunes) deposits. Also note the surface cutting down from left to right in upper part of cliff — a nice erosional surface, which is overlain by mostly thin-bedded, fine-grained strata.

Friday Field Foto #120: Roadcut of fine-grained strata in Patagonia

This week’s Friday Field Foto is from the Upper Cretaceous Magallanes Basin strata in southern Chile. The “natural” outcrops in this region are exceptional, but a geologist will always take advantage of roadcuts when they can. The national park in this region is attracting more visitors with each passing year, which has resulted in some road improvements and construction. The photo below is an essentially brand new roadcut exposing the fine-grained deep-marine sedimentary rocks of the Punta Barrosa Formation.

Friday Field Foto #119: North Fork Toutle River and Mt. Saint Helens

I can’t resist posting another photo I took on a flight from Vancouver to Oakland recently for this week’s Friday Field Foto. If you ever find yourself booking one of these flights make sure to get the window seat on the right side of the plane going north and on the left side of the plane going south. I can’t promise that’s the flight path for every flight but it worked out for me!

This is a photograph of Mt. Saint Helens in southern Washington State facing east. I like this shot because it nicely shows the relationship of the river system that is carrying the volcaniclastic detritus away.

Friday Field Foto #118: Mt. St. Helens from the air

Okay, so maybe sitting on a commercial airplane isn’t technically “the field”, but, then again, geology is everywhere!

This week’s Friday Field Foto is a shot of Mt. St. Helens volcano in Washington State taken from the window seat of a plane flying from Vancouver to Oakland. Click on it for a bigger version.

Friday Field Foto #117: Seaweed-covered basalt boulders on the Na Pali coast, Hawai’i

This week’s Friday Field Foto is from a hike my wife and I took on the last day of a trip we took to Hawai’i earlier this year. If you take the coast trail from Ke’e Beach on the northwest shore of Kaua’i south for a couple of hours you reach this basalt boulder beach.

Friday Field Foto #116: Glacial outwash braidplain delta

This week’s Friday Field Foto is from a trip I took to the Arctic archipelago of Svalbard in June 2009.

There are virtually no roads on this group of islands, which means you need to hop on a small plane to get to other areas. This is a dream come true for those fascinated by this landscape. The photo above shows a beautiful braidplain delta building out into a fjord. Note how wave action has sculpted the tip of the delta. Also note the accumulation of sea ice to the left.
