Who are these people?

A brief foray out of geoscience topics … and perhaps a bit ranty for a Saturday morning.

Out here in California this week, the state supreme court ruled that banning same-sex marriage is unconstitutional. This is a big step for the civil rights movement of our time. This is one of those rulings, like Dover, that both makes me very happy but frustrates me at the same time that it even has to come to that. It seems so obvious to me … but, hey, that’s just me.

Which brings me to the title of the post. I simply cannot understand why people are so passionate about not letting two people that are committed to each other get married. With everything going on in the world today, this is where they put they’re energy. I’m convinced that many of those so fervently against same-sex marriage just need to actually know same-sex couples. Just to realize they are people … sounds simple, right? They are people. They are devoted to each other and all that stuff that people do. Get to know them.

Surely, a component of the anti-social progress movement could not and will not be convinced no matter what. These are the true crazies … but I think they are a very small minority. What they are good at, however, is whipping up enthusiasm and energy among those that I think fall into the category above - they simply need to know some same-sex couples. But, maybe I’m overly optimistic?

Well and truly said - good day for California to be sure. I too completely fail to see the objection, and find the notion of “protecting” marriage absurd and insulting to our collective intelligence.
