This is Montauk out on the end of Long Island. I was on a field trip that Les Sirkin ran which I think might have visited this very spot. All that I can remember is that the terminal Wisconsinan moraine runs offshore at this point.
This looks like it might be another moraine running down the spine of Long Island, sometimes referred to as the Ronkonkoma moraine. Les had a big debate with John Sanders, who thought the Ronkonkoma was an Illinoian margin. Les considered it a recessional Wisconsinan position.
I am a sedimentary geologist currently working as a research scientist. I write mostly about past and present research in geology (sedimentary and marine, in particular), general Earth science, and other random topics. I also like to share photographs I've taken from field work and other travels. Learn more here.
